Oral Nutritional Supplements (ONS) provide macronutrients and micronutrients and are available as ready-to-drink liquids or powders.

ONS is an effective and non-invasive solution for the management of disease-related malnutrition. Disease-related malnutrition (DRM) is caused by increased nutritional needs or decreased nutritional intake associated with a disease, disorder or medical condition. ONS are effective in a large number of diseases and their treatment – including cancer, stroke, neurological and gastrointestinal conditions and surgery.

Studies show that oral nutritional supplements have functional and clinical benefits in a wide range of patients when used either in the hospital or in the community. In particular, they can lead to increased energy levels, prevent weight loss and increased protein intake, improve muscle strength, increase body weight and improve quality of life. ONS significantly reduce hospital admission and readmission rates, fatigue, and the risk of infections and complications.

Some ONS are specifically designed for use for specific conditions with a formulation that meets the requirements of the disease or provides additional benefits. For example, there are formulations with reduced electrolytes for patients with kidney disease, increased omega-3 fatty acids and antioxidants for cancer patients. As well as concentrated formulations for patients with dysphagia or tailored micronutrient profiles for patients with cystic fibrosis.
